The month of May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year’s theme from the Mental Health Foundation is community. It’s a theme that couldn’t be more relevant – especially for business owners and their teams.
When we feel connected, supported and seen, we thrive. But in the fast pace of running a business, it’s easy for genuine connection to slip down the list.
So, how can we bring a sense of community into the workplace – and protect our mental wellbeing in the process?
Here are a few ideas to build connection and support, both for yourself and your team:
1. Start Small, Start Personal
It doesn’t have to be big and flashy. Ask someone how they’re doing – and really listen. Create a culture where it’s okay to say, “I’m not okay.” A quick non-work chat can go a long way. Those small moments of connection often have the biggest impact.
2. Create Shared Experiences
Can you bring the team together for lunch once a month? Start a walking club? Host a monthly “no agenda” coffee morning? Shared experiences build stronger relationships – and stronger teams. Encourage peer-to-peer informal chats, as it’s sometimes easier to open up to a team member than a boss.
3. Lead by Example
As a business owner, your team takes cues from you. If you talk openly about the importance of mental health, take breaks, and set boundaries, your team is more likely to do the same. Consider if outside help would be beneficial to your team – a coach, or a workshop. Sharing mental health tips, techniques and resources can start big conversations.
4. Encourage Proper Breaks
It’s easy to power through the day without stopping. But taking proper time off – including lunch breaks and holidays is a smart investment in your mental health and your teams. Stepping away from your screen, going for a lunchtime walk, or switching off completely for a few days helps you recharge, think more clearly and make better decisions. Encourage your team (and yourself!) to step back regularly. You’ll all feel better for it.
5. Take Care of Yourself
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Make time for your own connections– whether that’s with friends, mentors or other business owners. Your mental health matters just as much as your team’s.
At GreenStones, we believe business should be about more than just the bottom line. When you invest in your team members and your culture, the results follow – not just in productivity, but in happiness, retention and growth.
So, how could you bring more community and connection into your workplace this month?
