From Monday 11 October 2021 the GreenStones team will have the duty of caring for a handful of hybrid bird eggs. Yes, you did read that correctly… eggs!
Over the course of the next few weeks the GreenStones team will have the pleasure of experiencing and caring for newborn chicks, and it is all thanks to The Happy Chick Company.
The Happy Chick Company, which was founded in 2009, allows schools, nursing homes and private groups the opportunity to witness a memorable and ethical chick-hatching experience. They will be providing the GreenStones team with the chicks and the special equipment to help the eggs hatch in a safe environment. The average lifespan of these chicks are 3-4 years and on average, for the first two years, they will lay about 320 eggs! This will be the third time GreenStones have had chicks in the office, due to the many benefits that they bring…
According to recent surveys interacting with animals in the workplace can help team members’ work-life balance, as well as reduce stress by decreasing the level of cortisol and lowering the body’s blood pressure. Animals can boost moods and increase productivity, meaning a better office morale and a happier team.

- Food – Chickens are omnivores, besides eating seeds they will catch insects and small mammals, such as lizards and mice.
- Vision – Chickens colour vision is even better than humans!
- Dreamers – Just like humans and other mammals, chickens experience a REM (rapid eye movement) sleep phase, meaning they are able to dream.
- Flyers – Chickens are able to fly short distances, especially with a run up.
- Breeds – There are so many breeds of chickens that some have already become extinct. The colour of an eggshell indicates the birds breed.
- World Record – The largest chicken egg weighed 454 grams and was laid in Vineland, New Jersey in 1956.
