“We’ve always done it this way.”
It sounds harmless. Familiar. Comfortable, even. But in business, that phrase can quietly become one of the biggest barriers for growth. Because while you’re sticking with what’s always worked, the world around you is moving on. Systems improve. Technology evolves. Competitors adapt and slowly, without it being obvious, you start to fall behind.
The Hidden Cost of Standing Still
Most business owners don’t resist change on purpose. It tends to happen by default. You’re busy running the business, managing the team and keeping customers happy. The systems you’ve got seem to do the job and no one is shouting that something’s broken.
So, nothing changes.
But “it works” and “it works well” are two very different things.
Over time, small inefficiencies begin to creep in. Manual processes take longer than they should. Information isn’t as accessible as it could be. Decisions are made without the full picture. None of it feels urgent on its own, but together, it slows your business down.
Growth Comes From Better Questions
If you’re running an owner-managed business, chances are you’re ambitious. You want growth, better profits and more control. But growth doesn’t come from repeating the same processes year after year. It comes from being willing to challenge how things are done and to ask better questions.
- Is there a quicker way to do this?
- Is this system still fit for purpose?
- What would this look like if we started again today?
That’s where the shift happens.
Not through massive change overnight, but through small, consistent improvements.
A Simple Example
We’ve seen this ourselves at GreenStones. Years ago, sending accounts and documents in the post was just how things were done. It was familiar and widely accepted, but it was also slow and not particularly efficient.
We made a change.
First, we moved to electronic signatures, making the process quicker and easier for everyone involved. Then, more recently, we introduced a secure portal, giving customers one place to store and access their documents whenever they need them.
It’s not revolutionary. But it’s better. And that’s the point.
At GreenStones, this idea has come up time and time again over the years. In fact, we used to keep copies of Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson in our office library and give them to customers and new team members.
The message is simple but powerful: things are changing whether we like it or not. The businesses that adapt tend to move forward. The ones that resist it often get left behind.
It’s a short read, but one that still feels incredibly relevant for business owners today.
Keeping Up Isn’t Optional
Innovation in business isn’t always about big, disruptive changes. More often, it’s about small improvements that remove friction, save time and make things run more smoothly.
Technology plays a big part in that. Cloud accounting software like Xero, secure systems, automation tools and even AI are no longer “nice to have”. They’re quickly becoming the standard. The businesses that embrace them are freeing up time, gaining clearer insights and putting themselves in a stronger position to grow.
The risk isn’t in trying something new.
The real risk is standing still while everything else moves forward.
“We’ve always done it this way” might feel safe, but it can quietly limit what your business is capable of achieving.
Where might that phrase be showing up in your business right now?
