HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) started a new approach to business records checks (BRC) on 1 November 2012. Business owners are being contacted directly by HMRC, usually via telephone and regardless of whether or not they have an authorised adviser, and being invited to go through a short telephone questionnaire.
Depending on the outcome of this call, HMRC will either:-
- confirm to some businesses that no further action is required
- offer targeted self-help education options to businesses where some issues are identified
- refer the business for a “business records check” where it is decided that there is a at risk of inadequate record keeping.
Please note that HMRC may not have informed your adviser at all of this matter and that you are within your rights to say a polite no to all requests by HMRC and to direct all matters to your accountant to deal with.
If HMRC contact you regarding this matter or you would like to discuss this further please contact the team on 01733 371180 and we would be happy to help.
