Postal delay by HMRC on July Self Assessment Statements
HM Revenue and Customs have confirmed that they are late in issuing approximately 500,000 self assessment statements of account. HMRC stated it was due to a higher than anticipated number of statements required.
This could be a worry for anyone waiting for confirmation of their July 2011 payment on account, if you have one. If you were waiting for your statement then be advised to contact your accountant now for confirmation of any amount due. As with any tax, penalty or interest amount stated as due by HMRC I would advise checking with your accountant or correspondence from your accountant.
HMRC have stated that no interest will be applied if amounts due are paid within 30 days of receipt of the delayed postal statement, this shouldn’t be relied on but if penalised worth knowing for appeal.
The suggestion that the department had run out of paper to send the statements was not denied by HMRC!
