As Thursday 07 March 2024 (also known as World Book Day) rapidly approaches, the GreenStones team want to mix up our usual celebrations and make things a little competitive.
Instead of just discussing our favourite books (check out what our World Book Day 2023 recommendations were) the team are planning on starting our very own reading competition.
Why and What’s Involved?
Reading has so many benefits and it’s a tool which is crucial in our learning development. Listed below are a few benefits of reading:
- Improves our memory and knowledge.
- Expands our vocabulary and writing ability.
- Reduces stress and positively impacts our mental health.
- Enhances our imagination and creativity.
To help make this competition feasible for all our team members we’ve decided to measure how many books each team member can read over the course of three months.
Some of you may have heard about the 21-day rule (a rule in which some people believe it takes 21 days to form a habit), however researchers have discovered that is a myth. In fact, researchers discovered in a recent study that it takes an average of 66 days for a new behaviour, or action to become a habit. This amount of time will allow us to hopefully implement this positive practice, which we can sustain throughout the rest of the year.
It’s hard to create a reading challenge because of all the different variables you need to consider. The fact that all books are different, they contain different page numbers, have different sized fonts and chapters is a struggle to measure. Completing a book club styled competition might’ve been a better idea, however not everyone likes the same genre books and as we wanted to create an enjoyable activity for the GreenStones team to sustain, then we are giving them free range.
To make it a fair challenge those who finish a book will complete a small set of questions, for example – how would we rate it and what has the book taught us. On 31 May all of those who have completed a form will be put into a draw and one lucky person will be picked to win a prize. The more books we read, the higher the chance of us winning.
