Spring is the perfect time to step back, get organised and make sure your business is running as efficiently as possible. A financial spring clean can help you spot hidden costs, boost your cash flow and feel more in control of your numbers. Here’s how to get started…
1. Declutter Your Systems
Are you still using spreadsheets for some things and software for others? Jumping between bank feeds and paper receipts? Now’s the time to simplify.
Software like Xero bring everything together in one place, so you can see the full financial picture at a glance. If you’re not already using Xero – or feel like you could be using it better – check out our previous blog on Xero Bookkeeping Tips for some practical ideas and tips from the GreenStones bookkeepers.
Even if you’re already set up, it’s worth reviewing your processes. Could automation save you hours each month? Are you still manually sending invoices or chasing payments? A tidy system is a time-saving system.
2. Review Your Recurring Expenses
Subscriptions, software, standing orders… they can quietly build up in the background. Set aside time to go through your business bank statements and ask:
- Are we still using this?
- Is there a cheaper or better alternative?
- Could we bundle services and save?
3. Chase Overdue Invoices
We know – it’s never fun. But cash flow is the lifeblood of your business and outstanding invoices can seriously hold you back.
Start by running an aged debtors report and follow up on anything overdue. Xero can even automate reminders for you. If unpaid invoices are a regular issue, now’s a great time to rethink your credit control process.
4. Prep Your Self-Assessment Early
The 2024/25 Self-Assessment tax year officially ended on 05 April 2025 – so why not use your spring clean as a chance to get a head start on filing your tax return?
Gather your paperwork, receipts and mileage logs now. Set up folders (digital or physical) labelled by category – income, expenses, bank statements, etc. You’ll thank yourself later when January doesn’t feel like a mad rush.
And if you submit your tax return early, you’ll know what you owe well in advance – giving you more control over your cash flow.
5. Organise Your Financial ‘To-Dos’
That pile of receipts in your drawer. The mileage log you keep meaning to update. Block out an hour this month to tackle all those little admin jobs you’ve been putting off.
- Reconcile your bank account
- Review outstanding invoices
- Check cash flow for the month ahead
- Review any unusual transactions
- Back up or download key reports
Your finances don’t have to feel messy. A bit of spring cleaning now can help you feel more in control and confident for the months ahead.
